Although I was being somewhat facetious in the last paragraph, there truly is such a thing as special fractions, known as continued fractions, which make ordinary fractions look like walks in the park. What is a continued fraction? Well, it’s a fraction that…continues. All jesting aside, a continued fraction is a fraction which contains in the denominator another fraction, which contains another fraction, and so on. This “and so on” can actually go on forever, in which case we have what is know as an infinite continued fraction. For the purposes of this article, however, I shall confine myself to a discussion of one which does not, and is therefore called a finite continued fraction.
To understand and actually envision what these fraction beasts look like take the ordinary improper fraction 9/5 (improper, if you recall, because the numerator is bigger than the denominator). We can split this into a mixed number which is 1 + 4/5. Now watch what we do. If you recall what the reciprocal is, then you know that it is 1 divided by the number. Thus the reciprocal of 5 is 1/5 and the reciprocal of 10 is 1/10. Well this method works with fractions as well. The reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2 and the reciprocal of 8/9 is 9/8.
To get a continued fraction from the 9/5, we write this as 1 + 4/5 and then do something a bit strange. We write the 4/5 as 1/(5/4), which is actually the reciprocal of 5/4. (Remember the reciprocal of any number can be thought of as 1 divided by the number). So far we have 9/5 = 1 + 1/(5/4).
The next step is to write 5/4 as 1 + 1/4 and then replace this for the 5/4 in the denominator of the previous step. Thus we have 9/5 = 1 + 1/(1 + 1/4). If we write this in stacked form, which I cannot do in this article because of formatting considerations, we get a towering fraction that forms a triangular descending progression viewing from left to right. In this case, the fraction terminates once we reach a stage in which the numerator of the last fraction is less than the denominator (in this case 1/4).
The question you might have at this point-and a good question it would be-is “Why would we complicate an already complicated thing like a fraction?” The answer is that these interesting beasts help us do many things in mathematics. For instance, continued fractions allow us to solve quite easily many equations that we could not solve without their use. Continued fractions help us expand irrational numbers and get a better sense of what is going on with their infinite non-repeating decimal patterns. Continued fractions also help us determine whether certain types of equations are solvable or not.
So if you thought fractions were a problem, then think again because there are worse monsters out there in the realm of mathematics than these. All joking aside, fractions really are not that hard once you dive into them, nor are continued fractions. You just have to dive in.

First, some background. The discussion was how the concept of sales differs from the concept of networking – a debate I have a lot of fun with. The group was made up of 30 brandy new twenty something insurance agents – hired by the agency over the past year. Industry average suggests that only 11 percent will be retained by the agency within a four year period so only 3 of the 30 will be making money – the rest won’t be back. Think of what this costs the agency annually in recruiting, training, materials, reputation – not to mention sales opportunities lost. (Just for fun, consider calculating what these costs might be in your company.)
My belief is if more young bucks (many seasoned vets too) in the insurance industry (and in most sales roles in other industries) learned and practiced the skills of networking, they would make more money, feel better about their job, boss, and company, and may even stick around. How ’bout that?
It’s great to get questions from young people like this because I know they come from a sense of naiveté, lack of experience, and curiosity. I think young sales folks also realize it comes down to sink or swim. Remember your first day – at your first job? You didn’t know very much and you just wanted to fit in and hopefully learn the right way. In sales, it often comes down to learning what seems like the easiest way or your sales manager’s way – which ain’t always the right way.
OK, the question – I almost forgot: “When speaking with a potential contact, how would I let them know I want to network, rather than sell them stuff?”
The answer: Tell them. Just use the magic word – networking. Or network.
Would love to speak with you and see if we can help each other network.
Who are you looking to network with?
In the spirit of networking, how can I help you?
What other networking events do you attend? Have you attended?
How has networking impacted your business?
How much of your marketing is devoted to networking?
What are some of your goals when networking?
Takes the wind right out of the sale! Or your sales speak – so to speak. Often, those we meet don’t realize we’re looking to network unless we say so – especially, if the venue is informal and not framed as a ‘networking’ event. As soon as you use the magic word networking (provided you are genuine, authentic, and all about helping others), it should suggest that you are not looking to sell your wares – to them. If you talk the talk, you’re more likely to walk the walk. And set a positive and collaborative tone with those you meet. Try it, use the magic word – you might just sell something!

Emerging at dusk to start their nightly hunt for food, Badgers will eat virtually anything being omnivorous berries, fruits, nuts, small rodents even a hedgehog in extreme cases, there is plenty of choices on the menu for them. We can also encourage them to come to our gardens with the temptation of something tasty to eat, they are particularly fond of sweet things, this doesn’t mean however that you go out armed with a bar of Cadburys Dairy Milk, but some honeyed coated morsel would suffice.
A strong family unit and social structure is the mainstay of the Badgers life, their den or sett is comprised of tunnels, and nests. The groupings are made up of a Boar and a Sow these are the dominant breeding pair, however there is young males and females within this company. Setts are multi-generational, mating and cub bearing usually happens in the spring, but mating can happen later in the year as well, any pregnancy resulting from these matings is delayed to the following spring, giving mama a chance to raise the young that was born in the spring.
Badgers are still under threat because of the disease they are suspected of carrying (bovine tuberculosis), plus they can cause damage to crops and farmland. Bating, gassing and hunting are ways in which the Badger has been persecuted, thankfully help is at hand. Badgers are protected in the UK by the Protection of Badgers Act, 1992, and by Schedule 6 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. This offers them some degree of safety, unfortunately not everybody adheres to these laws, so the Badger is still often caught in snares and traps.
Thankfully their future looks bright, numbers are staying constant and there is a more general acceptance of them. Lets do our bit to help by driving carefully at night, so as we have stopping time, it is so distressing to see Badgers, hedgehogs and rabbits killed on the roads, because we drive too fast and fail to notice our native animals going about their business. It costs us nothing to slow down.

Why should you drink 8 glasses of water?
Your body is approximately 60 to 70 percent water. Water is needed to regulate your body temperature, transports oxygen to all of your cells, and helps remove waste. It keeps our skin, nails, and hair healthy. It helps muscle tone and reduces fat deposits. It also assists in weight loss. It naturally suppresses your appetite and helps your body to metabolize your stored fat. Dehydration is also one of the most common causes of fatigue during the day.
Six easy tips to make your water consumption painless:
1. Buy a case of water bottles to keep under your desk. Most water bottles are 15 to 16 ounces. One bottle equals two glasses. That means only 4 bottles a day and you have achieved your goal. (Just be sure to recycle the bottles!)
2. Buy a big reusable water jug. I have one that holds exactly 8 glasses or 64 ounces. Just get one jug down and you are there. It’s easier too because you don’t have too keep track of how many bottles you drank each day. I was finding my self trying to remember, did I have 3 or 4 bottles today? I found a good jug at the dollar store for only $2.00. I just fill it up each morning, add some ice and take it with me to work.
3. I personally am not a sipper. I have to force myself to drink my water. I don’t necessary drink it because I’m thirsty, I drink it because I know I need to and I know I will feel loads better if I do. Make yourself chug 8 to 16 ounces four times through out the day. It’s really not that much once you do it.
4. Try adding Propel, Crystal Light or any other flavored water packets to add to your water. Just make sure it’s not real high in calories.
5. When you get up in the morning make a point to drink 2 glasses first thing before anything else. Before your coffee, breakfast or anything.
6. Drink a glass before and after each meal. This will also decrease the amount of food you intake.
It will take a few days to get used to drinking 8 glasses of water each day, but once you do you will feel the difference in your body and energy level.
