If you have had only one cesarean delivery, VBAC could be a safe option for you. The VBAC method is ideal if you have only one low, side-to-side scar from a c-section, you have had 2 cesareans before, but you have also delivered vaginally, the hospital has the staff and tools to do a quick C-Section in case one is needed and you don’t have a reason for a C-section in this pregnancy such as placentia previa. (Placenta Previa is a condition where the placenta that has grown low into the uterus and is partially or fully covering the birth canal). You and your doctor should consider these factors before doing a trial of labor. The VBAC method should not be used if you have two C-section scars and have not delivered vaginally before or if you have any scarring above the thinner, lower part of your uterus.

The VBAC procedure has several advantages compared to the regular Cesearan birth. The VBAC allows you to avoid a c-section scar and if you are planning a future pregnancy, decreases your chances of complications. The more scars you have on your uterus the greater the chance of problems with a later pregnancy. The VBAC also has a lower risk of infection. This method is preferred when you have a large fetus, your pregnancy goes beyond 40 weeks or if you are older than 35 years old.

The risks of a VBAC are rare but could occur. The most serious risk is that the Cesearen scar could come open during labor and can be quite serious for the mother and baby. For this reason it is recommended that candiates for this procedure have only one, low c-section scar.

I have three girls and one boy, so majority had to win out, but who knows, maybe even my boy would like to make candles.
